FUSION Profile

Hot Yoga Goddess

By Margaret Jetelina

Tanzanian-born Indian Gulie Ajania, the owner of Bikram Yoga Tri-City in Co- quitlam, B.C., is a yoga dynamo, whose healthy lifestyle, youthful looks and energetic spirit belie her actual age. You’ll be shocked when you hear the number.

So, how old are you? “I’m 75!”

When did you immigrate to Canada? “It was June 1976.”

Why did you make the leap? “I came as a single parent, with my two boys, Ashif, 11, and Riyaz, 9. The political situation in Kenya [where she lived] was not good at that time. That motivated me to move so my boys could have a safe place to grow up.”

Why Vancouver? “My sister came here, so I followed her.”

The NOW : Business

Crank up the heat, hot yoga comes to the Tri-Cities

In July 2004, at the age of 67, Gulie Ajania opened her Bikram Yoga studio in Coquitlam. Although she had been involved in various yoga methods since the 1960's, it was at her first Bikram Yoga class in 2001 that she knew she had found her calling.

Six months later, she was in Los Angeles attending the nine week intensive teacher training to become a certified Bikram yoga instructor. Ever since then, Gulie has been sharing passion and expertise with students at various Lower Mainland studios.

Gulie is very excited to be bringing this powerful practice to the Tri-City community. She brings together her genuine warmth for people with her passion for Bikram yoga and invites you to join her in her custom designed zen-like studio.
